Wound Care

Wound Care at Jacksonville Medical Center is normally provided by the hospital’s Physical Therapy department. Wound care is the monitoring and treatment of wounds (a type of injury where the skin is torn, cut or punctured) resulting from surgery or accidents. Some wounds don’t want to heal properly and require specialized care. There are many reasons why this happens, and in facilitating the optimal care for those who suffers with wounds, the PT department staff coordinates patient care plans with all involved medical professionals. The medical team works together to determine the root cause of the resistance to healing and evaluates any underlying conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation, lifestyle habits that may inhibit the natural healing process, infections, nutritional deficiencies, physical disabilities, a suppressed immune system, or the effects of chemotherapy or radiation. Inadequate blood supply is one of the most significant factors and often occurs in diabetes. Inefficient oxygen supply and not enough removal of wastes from the body can also contribute to wounds that won’t heal properly. Wounds in the lower extremities, are also at risk for diabetics.

The staff of Jacksonville Medical Center is committed to providing optimal care with dignity and respect. Encompassing a patient’s physical and emotional well being is an integral part of the healing process. Providing wellness and prevention education is essential in providing treatment.
